Logic-Based Tools for Legal Contract Drafting: prospects and problems

Much of the research in the Artificial Intelligence and Law community has been concerned with the representation of legislation and regulations with a view to provide advisory systems for policy makers, legal practitioners and the general public. A considerable amount of research in Artificial Intelligence and Law focused on logic-based representations of legislation and regulations (for a comprehensive discussion see (Sergot 1991) ). It has been noted time and time again in the literature that the combination of law and logic is fruitful: on the one hand, law is a rich domain with plenty of opportunities for applying logical models; on the other hand, logic is promising for formalising the legal domain, where natural language itself is regimented and is already close to a logical form.
